I have just had the same experience on my SUSE-10.3 box, self-built
ecasound, no JACK, pressed Ctrl-C several times trying to quit a simple
Perl script which just calls ecasound from inner loop of two nested
ones - the outer being and endless one (for(;;)), the inner being a loop
on songs.

I had to simply hold Ctrl-C, because it's not easy to kill such a script,
and it took a couple of seconds until the crash, so such a script might
be helpful in reproducing the problem.

I wasn't running as root, so I do not quite understand how a non-GUI
non-root program can crash X.

OTOH, in my case ecasound interacts through LADSPA plugins with other
processes through shared memory, but these other processes are also run
not as root. worked fine for me.
