Ok, if arecord doesn't work, then it's most probably an ALSA driver

How about different formats:
ecasound -f:8,1,44100 -i /dev/dsp -o foo.wav
ecasound -f:16,1,48000 -i /dev/dsp -o foo.wav
ecasound -f:16,2,44100 -i /dev/dsp -o foo.wav

Why use aplay? "ecasound -i foo.wav -f:s32_le,2,44100 -o alsa,default"
