Yup, it was a real bug. Fixed in current CVS-tree.

Longer than what? :) It could be that mpg123 is outputting the decoded
data in different format than ecasound expects. How about:
ecasound -sr:44100 -f:16,2,44100 -i file.mp3 -o /dev/dsp
mpg123 should be able to handle the conversion to the format requested by
