One known problem case is OSS drivers that don't support the
OSS-triggering feature. In these cases ecasound should output an error
message along lines "AUDIOIO-OSS: OSS-device doesn't support
SNDCTL_DSP_SETTRIGGER". You can get around this by recompiling ecasound
with "./configure --disable-osstrigger ; make ; make install".
Another thing to check is mixer settings (make sure you have pcm-output
and master-vol enabled and at >50%). But of course if other apps work ok,
this shouldn't be the problem.
If you these don't help, can you (privately) send me output of
1) "ecasound -i somefile.wav -o /dev/dsp -d:255"
2) "strace ecasound -i somefile.wav -o /dev/dsp"
